Jazz with Slavic roots

Polish singer Anna Maria Jopek, a classically trained pianist who turned to jazz music, performs her debut concert in the city. "I embrace a lot of influences. Jazz is by far the most important in its freedom, its harmony and its sense of time but I was brought up with the old Polish folk songs," says the musician.

New Zealand fusion on stage

Kapa Haka of New Horizons, an exotic mix of brass band and kapa haka, the cultural dance of Maori people in New Zealand, will be staged at Guangzhou Opera House on Sept 12. Eight artists - four men and four women - will perform with choral singing, dance and movements associated with hand-to-hand combat.

Strauss-inspired ballet premieres

Dancers from the National Ballet of China will perform La Chauve-Souris, a ballet based on Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus with choreography by Roland Petit, for audiences in Beijing for the first time. Petit's longtime assistant Luigi Bonino and costume designer Luisa Spinatelli have joined in the production. Internationally renowned dancer Manuel Legris has been invited to perform at the premiere on Sept 11.

September Miracle to spin magic

Art beat in September

September Miracle, the pop duo consisting of instrumentalist Wang Xiaowei (pictured left) and singer Wang Xiaohai, will hold a concert in Beijing next month. Known for its adaptation of traditional Chinese folk songs and revolution-themed songs of the 1950s and '60s, the duo rose to fame after they finished first on Star Boulevard, a popular CCTV competition, in 2008. The pop duo also appeared on CCTV's Spring Festival Gala three times.
