Liao Fan wins Best Actor at Berlin

The Chinese film Bai Ri Yan Huo (Black Coal, Thin Ice) won the Golden Bear for best picture at the 64th Berlin film festival Saturday.

China's Liao Fan was named Best Actor for his role as a detective pursuing a serial killer in the film, becoming the first Chinese ever to win the prize.

Unacceptable failure

A girl from Shandong province performed kung fu at the Beijing Film Academy campus Saturday to express her discontent after failing the academy’s preliminary admissions test.

The performing arts applicant complained that she was not given a chance to showcase her kung fu skills during the test.

The academy released the list of candidates for the second round of the test Saturday. A total of 797 applicants survived the preliminary test for the performing arts school.

Six die in Lantern Festival fires

Six people were killed in fires on Friday as Chinese celebrated the traditional Lantern Festival, the Ministry of Public Security said on Saturday.

A total of 2,581 fires were reported in China on the day of the festival, and nearly 33,500 firefighters were dispatched, the ministry added.

Polar bear brothers seek mates

A polar-themed park in Northeast China has issued a global "marriage-seeking" bid for two polar bears in captivity at a polar animal show on Valentine's Day on Friday.

The zookeeper at Harbin Polarland said that polar bears reach sexual maturity at the age of five. However, the older bear is 10 years old, and the younger one is 9, making both "elderly bachelors" due to the lack of female polar bears in China.

Canada cancels Immigrant Investor Program to pave way for new trials

According to an official from Canada's immigration department, the cancellation of Canada's Immigrant Investor Program is part of the country's 2014 Economic Action Plan, which aims to end the large backlog of immigrant investor applications and pave the way for new trial plans. The efforts seek to satisfy economic demand and the needs of the labor market.

An earlier report by South China Morning Post said that the cancellation of the program was caused by the large volume of applications from wealthy Chinese.

China comes in 2nd in think tank ranking

China ranked second place in the 2013 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) at the University of Pennsylvania, which was released in Jan 2014.

The US took first place with 1,828 think tanks. China had a total of 426.

Nanjing Massacre archives to file for Memory of the World

The Nanjing archives bureau has made public a new batch of archives on crimes during the Japanese invasion of Nanjing city in World War II. The newly-released archives and the previous five batches on the Nanjing Massacre will file for UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme.

Truck turns into villa

Four road-trip enthusiasts in Chongqing municipality spent two and a half months remodeling a truck into a mobile villa.

The expanded area of the villa covers 24 square meters and can accommodate 12 people. The villa can be used to cook, bathe, play Mahjong and sing karaoke.
