Tidal wave of Romance

7,300 couples got married in Beijing on Feb 13, 2014, as Valentine's Day and the Lantern Festival fell on the same day this year in China, Beijing Morning Post reported.

Around 70% couples had chosen to make an appointment online for the registration, to tie the knot on the special day.

Love you 'til the end of the world'

A Beijing man and his fiancee spent Valentine's Day in Ushuaia, in southern Argentina, on Friday, preparing for their wedding ceremony that will be held in Antarctica. Zhang Xinyu proposed to Liang Hong in the arctic region last year. Seven months ago, they began sailing in a boat to Antarctica in an attempt to hold their wedding there.

Dove received coldly

The consumption of Dove chocolate sees a decline in China on Valentine's Day, since the famous chocolate brand was exposed as relatively high in trans fatty acid, which can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

An inspection of nine chocolate brands on the Chinese market has found that Dove dark chocolate and Meiji dark chocolate contain the highest concentrations, reaching 0.13 percent.

Mars Inc, the makers of Dove, responded that the trans fat content of Dove is within China's rules on food nutrition labeling.

Bad service

Beijing Capital International Airport was tagged as worst luggage service in domestic airports by passengers taking part in a Sina.com on-line poll during the Spring Festival. Problems like long waiting times, lack of luggage carts, luggage damage and carousel errors are among the most complained about. A respondent said she found her skin toner broken and the liquid was everywhere in the case.

Subway accident

A man killed himself by jumping off onto the rail when the train drew in on Subway Line 1 in Beijing on Friday. The accident left the line suspended for half an hour during night rush hours as staffs had to turn off the power to remove the body. Three carriages of the train had pulled in the platform when the man jumped off, according to the subway authority, and it was too late to brake.

World No.1 from China

China's Shuai Peng has created history on Thursday as she became the first Chinese player to become the world's top-ranked player in tennis. Peng will ascend to the top spot after she and partner Su-Wei Hsieh defeated Irina Buryachok and Vitalia Diatchenko, 6-2 6-4 in the second round of the WTA Qatar Total Open. Peng will replace the co-world No.1s Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci.

Woman fails to get help after mishap

A woman in Ningbo who fractured her foot after falling on the pavement waited for 20 minutes before a pedestrian called for an ambulance, according to local newspaper Xiandai Jinbao. The newspaper suspected that many passers-by did not assist her because they were afraid it was a scam. The woman, surnamed Zheng, resorted to shouting out, "I fell myself!" before getting help.

Spilled Moutai

A truck carrying 2,700 boxes of Moutai white spirits turned over on a highway, and some cleanup workers were so affected by the strong fumes of alcohol they reportedly slept for as long as 20 hours afterward, the Chongqing Evening News reported on Friday. The accident occurred at about 2:40 am on Feb 12 on a highway in Chongqing municipality, where highway police organized porters to clean up the scene after sending the injured driver to hospital.
