The film's heroine is no longer a delicate princess as in previous Disney films, but an independent, even a little rebellious, modern woman. The Little Mermaid is regarded as opening a 10-year-long "Renaissance" period for the Walt Disney company, which ends with Tarzan, released in 1999.
