Blinded child uses tongue to 'see'

Six-year-old Guo Bin, whose eyes were gouged out by an unknown assailant in Fenxi county, Shanxi province, in August, has been fitted with a device that allows him to "see" with his tongue, enabling him to visualize shapes and walk unaided, news.xinhuanet.com reported.

The device comprises a miniature video camera attached to a pair of sunglasses fitted with a motion-sensor that transmits images to the wearer using an electrode-laden pad on the tongue.

Whale washed up in typhoon

A three-meter whale weighing four tons was rescued after it became stranded at a Guangdong beach, apparently washed ashore by typhoon-whipped waves, on Saturday, CCTV reported on its Sina Weibo account.

The death toll from super typhoon Rammasun has increased to 17 as the strongest typhoon in four decades brought gales and downpours to a number of southern provinces.

HK media: Telecom carriers to shut VIP lounges

Reports on Hong Kong Commercial Daily's website said China's three telecom carriers, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, will shut VIP lounge services in airports and railway stations by October.

According to the Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council the operators are required to cut 40 billion yuan ($6.4b) in marketing expenses over the next three years, and the lounge closure is widely speculated part of the cost reduction efforts.

Costly cup of tea

A photo taken on Friday of a Chinese tycoon drinking tea from an antique Chinese porcelain cup he had just bought at auction for 280 million yuan ($36 million) went viral online.

Liu Yiqian, a Chinese businessman who made his fortune in real estate and pharmaceuticals bought the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), 8.2- centimeter-diameter cup covered with chickens, at a Hong Kong auction on April 8, making it the most expensive piece of Chinese porcelain.
