Assistance cards issued to elderly

A community service office in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, has issued cards bearing the words "Help me, please" to elderly people in case they need assistance if they fall down, dbw.cn reported on Thursday.

The cards also bear the person's name, age, address, medical history and a contact phone number.

There have been numerous reports of elderly people making compensation claims against those who help them, deterring many from offering assistance to strangers.

Clinics punished for gender identification

Nine clinics, which illegally identified fetal gender, have been punished by the health authority in Handan county of Hebei province, Hebei Daily reported on Thursday.

Officials checked the clinics on Tuesday after receiving reports about the illegal identification of fetal gender.

They found that the nine private clinics had made such identifications for 20 yuan ($3.20). The clinics were punished by the authority.

Officer sentenced for contract killing

A police officer in Meishan was given the death sentence with a two-year reprieve after being hired by a rich friend to kill a co-manager of his business. When Shen Yongzheng found that his wife had an affair with Fan Decai, he promised to pay the police officer, Yan Farong, 1.8 million yuan ($290,323) to kill Fan. With the help of a driver, Yan beat Fan to death with a steel pipe, West China Metropolis Daily reported.

Hospital 'refused to treat fever case'

A Guangzhou resident has complained that a children's hospital refused to treat her daughter who had a temperature of 41 C, New Express reported on Thursday. The woman, surnamed Luo, took her daughter to the hospital on the night of May 22 and was told there were no more registration cards for patients and she had to go elsewhere. The health bureau, which received Luo's complaints, said on Wednesday the hospital was wrong to refuse the patient. An investigation is underway.

Pregnant woman alleged to run drug ring
