A total of 135,000 people have registered as volunteers in Zhangjiagang, or roughly 15 percent of the total population, according to the Zhangjiagang municipal propaganda and cultural office.

The government has launched a series of events to encourage the public to participate in volunteer work.

In 2013, the municipal government launched a campaign nationwide to solicit ideas about the design of the volunteer logo, and other items such as clothes, flags and bags that could carry the message of volunteering.

A promotion campaign was also launched on various media outlets. Zhangjiagang Daily has covered volunteer activities on each International Volunteer Day and Learn from Lei Feng Day. Moreover, advertisements promoting volunteer work were put on news media and all sorts of outdoor advertising platforms. In 2013, two mini-movies about the life of volunteers were released on video websites such as Youku and Tudou, receiving more than 50,000 hits.
