China's top product quality watchdog has revealed that 124 batches of imported food products and two batches of cosmetics were returned or destroyed in June due to poor quality.

The substandard products, which came from 24 countries and regions and included cakes, cookies, beverages and dairy products, were seized at ports of entry before they were sold in the domestic market, said Li Yuanping, spokesman of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. Containing excessive microorganisms and illegal food additives were the main reasons the products were rejected for sale in China, he said.

The same administration also reported eight fatalities, and 13 injures caused in 10 special equipment accidents involving elevators and mechanical equipment in June.

Most of the accidents occurred due to lack of sufficient safety awareness, Li said.

Also in June 1,882 harmful species were found on 61,072 occasions during import quarantine checks for agricultural products, according to the administration.
