A man who tried to commit suicide by throwing himself into the sea in Xiamen, Fujian province, unexpectedly drifted into the waters off Kinmen county, Taiwan, and was rescued.
The 39-year-old migrant worker from Hunan province, surnamed Pan, attempted suicide on July 12.
Pan, a strong swimmer, managed to buoy himself up on the sea while currents carried him along to Kinmen waters. Local fishermen spotted him and contacted the coast guard.
Pan was later treated in a hospital in Kinmen and was sent back to his hometown under a joint effort by the mainland's Red Cross Society and its Taiwan counterpart on July 14.
According to a Fujian Red Cross Society staff member surnamed Ye, Pan had a history of psychiatric problems but was in a good mental state when he returned to his native province.
