One of the assailants who carried out an attack in western China that injured four people has apologized and said that other members of his group had convinced him to participate in a "holy war", CCTV news reported.

Three knife-wielding men attacked people in a chess and card room in Yingbin Road last Sunday afternoon, but were fought back by the local people and quickly seized by the armed forces. Although the attacker was convinced by others that he will directly go to heaven if he participates in a holy war, he said he began to fear when the people around him started fighting back.

Dog-eaters and activists clash

Fight broke out between dog-eaters and activists near a dog-meat restaurant leaving a dog-eater injured in Yulin, Guangxi province, Saturday evening, Xinhuanet reported.

People in south China celebrated the annual dog-meat festival on Saturday to mark the summer solstice despite mounting protests from animal welfare groups and pet owners over the past few days. Some protests even led to confrontations. A customer at the restaurant said the injured person had blood all over his mouth. All the people involved in the fight were taken away by the police.

Thief beats professor

Former Vice President of National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts Ma Mingqun has been beaten up by a thief, Beijing Youth Daily reported.

Seventy-eight-year-old Ma was taking a walk near Hepingxiqiao station when he saw a woman stealing a wallet from a man and Ma immediately alerted the man about the theft. While the man successfully got back his wallet, Ma was hit by the thief who did not stop until another lashed out at her.

Man drowned to death, police claim

Police bureau of Pu'er city in Yunnan province announced on Saturday that Xia Wenjin, the man who was found dead in a fishing pond after being released from detention, had drowned to death, Beijing News reported. Police claimed the bruises on Xia's body were left by the rope that they had used to subdue him.

Xia was detained on May 5 for theft. When he was found dead in the fishing pond after eight days’ detention, his family had alleged that the policemen had tortured him to death and had thrown his body into the pond. Police officers involved in the case have been suspended.

Man throws baby son into river

A 26-year-old man in Panzhihua of Sichuan province who planned to commit suicide with one of his twin boys in Jinsha River on June 3, changed his mind after throwing the baby into the river, Chengdu Business Daily reported. The man separated from his wife last year and each of them kept one of the one-and-a-half-year-old twin babies. He felt huge pressure in his life and blamed his son for all of this. The man has been arrested for intentional homicide.

Villagers divide disputed land without authorization

More than 400 villagers from 84 families in Jingbian county, Shaanxi province, allocated 70 acres of disputed lands without authorization on June 1, Beijing News reported.

According to one of the villagers, the land contractor isa "powerful" family and they have been trying to get their land for years.

It is illegal for the villagers to divide the land without permission and the government will help solve the dispute through legal way, local government told the newspaper.
