A stray pig on Chang'an Avenue, a phoenix-like flamingo in Xinjiang, and severe pollution will hang over Central and East China through the weekend.

A pig was found strolling among the plants and grass on East Chang'an Avenue, east of Tian'anmen Square, while a policeman followed the pig to prevent it from running into the street.

Some shot a few pictures and posted them on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter.

Nurses detained

Two nurses from Beijing Chaoyang Hospital were detained for transfusing type-B blood into a woman with type-O blood six years ago, Beijing Times reported.

The woman, surnamed He, was sent to the hospital for influenza, but she went into a vegetative state after the wrong blood transfusion and died three months later. The family sued and has been trying to get compensation for the past six years but they have not reached an agreement with the hospital.

Severe haze

The most severe pollution haze so far this winter hit east and central regions of China, including Tianjin, Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Henan and Shanghai, with PM 2.5 particles higher than 150 micrograms per cubic meter, the National Meteorological Center reported.

The center predicts that the smog will hang around until Dec 9.

Phoenix-like bird

A flamingo resembling the very image of a phoenix was found in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. A shutterbug shot some eye-catching pictures of the flamingo and put them online.

Bird experts said flamingos usually migrate in flocks and do not usually go through China. This flamingo could have gotten separated from the migrating flock.

Bank clerk theft

A bank clerk in Henan province stole client information, forged their bank cards, and stole their money from ATMs wearing a mask, local media Dahe.cn reported.

The suspect was sentenced to five years in prison after he stole 65,000 yuan ($10,669) from two clients to pay his mortgage. He bought the mask for 2,540 yuan from an online store.

2-year-old in need

A 2-year-old girl with congenital heart disease in Fujian province is collecting cans on the street to raise money for her medical expenses, local media DKNB.com.cn reported.

The surgery for congenital heart disease requires about 100,000 yuan ($16,414), which is a large sum for the poor family. The media opened a hotline, 968977, for people who want to donate money.

Netizens said Chinese pop star Qi Wei, also known as Stephy, will marry her lesbian lover, Lin Zijun, in the United States in 2014. Qi's company has not confirmed the news.

Foreigner's unlicensed bike

A foreign man's motorbike was confiscated by police in Beijing after he rode it without a license plate and injured a middle-aged woman, police said on Tuesday. Video footage released by police showed that the motorbike hit a woman near a sidewalk on Monday. She had minor injuries and was sent to a hospital. Beijing News reported that the man gave the woman 1,800 yuan ($295) in compensation.
