4 family members get liver cancer

Doctors have warned that some cancers may be contagious after four members of a family contracted the same form of the disease. A man surnamed Tan, 50, from Yubei district, has liver cancer, and his wife, son and mother-in-law all died from the disease. The US medical journal Cancer Cell has published a research paper that says cancer is contagious.

Drunk flees with cash from police

A drunk who threatened to kill himself ran off after receiving 10,000 yuan ($1,608) from police. The man climbed onto a platform at a construction site on Sunday and said he was going to jump because he had been cheated out of all his money by a woman. Officers tried to calm him down by giving him their money, and he fled with the cash. Police are searching for him.

PLA school enrolls math girl, 9

A 9-year-old girl who is skilled at zhuxinsuan — a traditional form of mental arithmetic — was enrolled by the Military School of Economics of the People's Liberation Army last week. Zhuxisuan is regarded as one of the country's intangible cultural assets. The girl, Ding Liqun from Lanzhou, learned the technique when she was 6 and achieved a high standard. She will got to the school in March to receive further training.
