China opposes US-Taiwan official contacts

BEIJING - China opposes official contacts and development of substantial relations between the United States and Taiwan, said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei on Thursday.

China's position is consistent and clear for US-Taiwan relations, he added.

Hong made the remarks in response to the report that Dawn L. McCall, Coordinator for International Information Programs of the US State Department had visited Taiwan recently. She had also met with senior Taiwan officials including Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou.

China urges the U.S. to adhere to the One-China policy and the three Sino-US joint communiques, said the spokesman.

"The US side should address issues related to Taiwan appropriately and stop any form of official contacts with Taiwan, so as to avoid damaging the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and Sino-US relations," Hong said.
