TOKYO - Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko will visit Tokyo Sky Tree, the world's tallest stand-alone communications tower on Thursday ahead of its opening in late May, the Imperial Household Agency said Tuesday.

The imperial couple is scheduled to go up to the higher of the tower's two observation decks, which is about 450 meters above the ground, and be briefed on the 634-meter tower during their around 20-minute visit.

The world's tallest communications tower, Tokyo's new tourist attraction, Tokyo Sky Tree complex, will officially open on May 22.
