Thousands of pigs wait to be rescued from flood

A pig farm where more than 6,000 pigs have been raised is now facing a life and death emergency as Anhui suffers through severe flooding for over a week.

Heavy floods in Anhui trapped the 6,000 pigs inside the hog lots in Shucheng county, Liu'an city, putting the pigs' lives in danger.

Earlier, a set of photos showing a farm worker saying goodbye to the presumably-doomed pigs went viral on the Internet.

The photos caught the attention of Anhui's Xishang investment company, which sent a rescue team Tuesday morning, reported Sina.com.

Due to the floods, the vehicles could not go inside the lot, which meant the rescue team had to physically carry out the hogs.

According to a rescuer, the depth of the water in the hog lot was as high as a human's hip and the pigs had been in water for more than 20 hours.

As of 1pm on Tuesday, more than 60 pigs had been rescued. They will receive physical checks to ensure they have no diseases.

The number of living pigs is now about 3,000, and it will take about two days to relocate them.
