President Xi Jinping stressed the importance of adhering to, and practicing, common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security in Asia.

Additionally, he said, efforts should be made to increase understanding, promote dialogue and enhance coordination, thus advancing the building of a security governance pattern with Asian characteristics.

Xi made the remarks on Thursday when addressing the fifth foreign ministers' meeting of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in Beijing.

Xi said, with the economy of Asia taking the lead globally and regional cooperation and integration rising, the strategic status of Asia in global development is growing.

It is of urgent need to strengthen regional security cooperation as both traditional security issues, such as regional turbulence and conflict and non-traditional security threats, such as terrorism, exist, Xi said.

The President also said that Asian countries and their people need and are capable of maintaining security and an environment for development through dialogue and cooperation.
