PYONGYANG - Kim Jong Un, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), was reelected Wednesday as first chairman of the country's National Defense Commission (NDC) at its ongoing parliamentary session.

The first session of the 13th Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) solemnly declared that Kim, first secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army, was reelected first chairman of the NDC of the DPRK, the official news agency KCNA reported.

"It reflected the unanimous will and desire of all service personnel and people, and is also an expression of the absolute support for and trust in him," said the report.

The SPA is the DPRK's highest legislative body, with its newly elected 687 deputies last month. It has the power to adopt, amend or supplement enactments to the constitution, determine state policies and budgets, and adjust the country's leadership.

On Tuesday, Kim set forth important tasks to further strengthen the party as he presided over a meeting of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party, the KCNA said early Wednesday.

"The meeting discussed the issue of reinforcing the organization for increasing the leadership role and function of the Party, and protect the dignity and sovereignty of the country, " the report said.

It also discussed a proposal for forming the state leadership body to be submitted to the parliamentary session, with the participants unanimously adopting decisions on the relevant agenda items, it added.

In April 2012, Kim was elected the NDC's first chairman at the fifth session of the 12th Supreme People's Assembly.
