Shen Qipeng's current solo exhibition, titled Images of Time, shows 178 drawings, sketches and ink paintings he has created over the past six decades.

Shen, 70, is a representative of achieved, self-taught painters of his generation.

Born in Nantong, Jiangsu province, Shen graduated from high school in 1966. Like many of his peers, he went to farm in the countryside where he stayed for 11 years during the “cultural revolution” (1966-76).

Shen displayed talent in painting since he was in kindergarten. He had been improving techniques since then and throughout the farming days.

His painting skills earned him a position at local art institutes, even though he didn’t go to art schools. He further cultivated artistic attainment by learning from other painters and taking short-term courses at colleges.

Shen's works were featured at the annual National Fine Arts Exhibition for several times and also collected by the National Art Museum of China.

The exhibition is running at the National Museum of China through June 15.
