Tropical storm Fung-Wong leaves 16 dead, 16 injured in Philippines

MANILA-- Sixteen people were killed while 16 others were injured after tropical storm Fung-Wong (local name Mario) battered northern Philippines, local disaster relief agency said Wednesday.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said in a report that four other people are missing.

NDRRMC said 13 of the fatalities were killed in separate drowning incidents.

The tropical storm brought torrential rains and caused heavy flooding and landslides in many areas in northern Philippines, including the Philippine capital region of Metro Manila.

Tropical storm Fung-Wong also damaged 1.34 billion pesos (30.07 million U.S. dollars) worth of infrastructure and crops. The country's rice and corn sectors suffered the biggest loss estimated at 558.11 million pesos (12.52 million U.S. dollars).

NDRRMC said a total of 426 houses were totally damaged while 1, 963 houses were partially damaged in areas drenched by the storm.

Fung-Wong, which exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility on September 22, affected a total of 400,140 families or 1.81 million individuals in 27 provinces.
