DAMASCUS - Two civilians were killed Wednesday by the gunfire of armed groups in central al-Midan neighborhood of the Syrian capital Damascus, state-run SANA news agency reported.

The gunfire occurred at al-Jazmatieh lane in al-Midan, and one civilian was injured in the incident, SANA said.

The report said that gunmen showed up and opened fire at passersby in the area, which has witnessed two fatal suicide bombings that have claimed the lives of dozens of people since early this year.

Meanwhile, armed groups in eastern Deir al-Zour province attacked a military overnight bus at al-Mayadien area, killing unspecified number of army men and injuring others, SANA said, adding that a number of gunmen were killed in the shootout.

On the opposition side, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that 17 people were killed Wednesday in several Syrian areas.

The observatory, which blames the government for the prolonged violence, said that several neighborhoods in central Homs province were subject to heavy bombardment Wednesday. Yet, the activists' account could not be independently checked.
