UNITED NATIONS - Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Thursday called for a new round of talks on the Iranian nuclear issue as soon as possible, urging all parties to be dedicated to achieving progress.

Yang made the remarks when foreign ministers of the five permanent UN Security Council members and Germany met here on the subject on the sidelines of the annual UN General Assembly.

The Iranian nuclear talks have gained hard-won positive momentum, and there is still room for diplomacy in this regard, Yang emphasized in the meeting.

The six countries should intensify their diplomatic efforts, maintain and promote talks, stabilize the situation, and gradually seek a comprehensive, long-term and proper resolution, he said.

China has always adopted an objective, just and responsible position on the Iranian nuclear issue, noted Yang, adding that Beijing has played a constructive role in promoting talks.

China is willing to maintain communication and strengthen cooperation with the other parties in a bid to achieve a diplomatic resolution of the issue, he said.

Yang and his counterparts exchanged views on the status quo of the Iranian nuclear issue and the next step forward, and stressed that they would continue to maintain and promote dialogue with Iran and to be committed to settling the issue through negotiation.

The six chief diplomats said they are looking forward to holding a new round of talks with Iran soon, and will push for substantial progress.
