Earthquake jolts 5 cities in C Philippines

MANILA - The 5.9-magnitude earthquake off the town of Cauayan in the Central Philippine province of Negros Occidental was felt in five cities, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

PHIVOLCS said the Intensity 5 earthquake was felt in the cities of Binalbagan, Hinobaan, and Hinigaran in Negros Occidental.

Intensity 4 was recorded in the city of Sigma in Capiz province and Alimodian in Iloilo province.

PHIVOLCS said it does not expect aftershocks following the quake which struck at 1:21 pm on Wednesday.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), however, measured the earthquake at magnitude 5.6, with its epicenter at a depth of 46.4 kilometers.

PHIVOLCS said the earthquake did not cause any casualties or damage to infrastructure.
