Cambodian police arrest 10 Chinese on telephone fraud charges

PHNOM PENH - Cambodian police detained 10 Chinese nationals, including three females, who were allegedly involved in a telecom scam, a local military police chief said.

Heng Bunty, chief of Preah Sihanouk provincial military police, said the police raided two rented houses in the southern province on Wednesday and nabbed the suspects. Three of the suspects are from the Chinese mainland and seven from China's Taiwan province.

Police said the detainees used VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol, a type of internet phone service) from Cambodia to threaten and extort money from victims in China.

The authorities seized a number of laptops and telephones from the suspects during the raid, said the official.

Telephone fraud has become a social security problem in China.

Suspects often use overseas servers to make phone calls, making it more difficult for the Chinese police to trace them.

Perpetrators telephone their victims in China, claiming to be court or police officials, noting that the victims' bank accounts had been breached so that they have to transfer the money to a separate "safe account."
