Activists save dogs from dog meat carnival

With the annual dog meat carnival in Yulin, South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region around the corner, animal rights activists have received calls from dog dealers offering to sell dogs to them instead, the Legal Evening News reported.

Among the activists is Yang Xiaoyun, a woman who spent 150,000 yuan ($24,000) last year buying dogs from dealers in Yulin, where dogs are viewed as a traditional source of meat. People eat dog meat and lychees to celebrate the arrival of the Summer Solstice in June every year.

Yang plans to come to Yulin to save more dogs on June 18, and she believes the rescue will be different this year.

For the past few years, animal rights activists, both at home and abroad, have been urging people to boycott the "festival", their main objection being against the mass slaughter of dogs. The Yulin local government has decided not to interfere, because it is a civil matter.
