ROME - Roberto Mancini said money did not play a big role in his decision to take the helm of Galatasaray.

The former Inter and Manchester City manager was appointed to take over the Turkish side on Monday and made his debut on Wednesday when his side drew with Juventus 2-2 in a Champions League group game in Turin.

He dismissed the speculation that he went to Galatasaray for money.

"Aside from the fact contracts are part of our profession, I accepted the proposal because Galatasaray are a prestigious club taking part in the Champions League with a strong history," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.  "I am also fascinated by the idea of a new experience in a country that is a bridge between Europe and Asia. Turkey is a nation with a fast-developing economy and a history going back millennia."

He conceded that his side were lucky to draw Juventus on his debut.

"We were in part lucky, but the players put themselves at my disposal straight away. There are famous champions here and we can play good football," he said.

"After conceding six against Real Madrid, something had to be modified, so we were more attentive in defence," he added.
