2007 marks the 100th anniversary of modern Chinese drama.
Sponsored by the Ministry of Publicity, the Ministry of Culture, State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, Chinese Writers' Association, and Beijing Municipal Government, a variety of celebrations were held from April 6th across the country. Thirty-two stage dramas from all over China toured 11 theaters in Beijing and another 31 selected classic dramas staged in eight provinces and cities.
There were a total of 62 showings during the 20-day celebration in Beijing. Holders of set tickets were free to watch any show during the period, to the best convenience of dram enthusiasts.
To popularize and bring modern drama closer to the general public, the ticket prizes, ranging from 20 yuan (2.58 USD) to 80 yuan (10.3 USD), were relatively small and affordable by most people especially the students. A set of ten 80-yuan tickets plus a 68-page souvenir booklet of centennial modern drama were now available at a discount price of 500 yuan. Apart from that, the organizer also arranged major members of the troupes to sign on the set tickets.
