France: Initiator of Cultural Heritage Day

France has a long history and numerous historic sites, nearly 40 which have been included in UNESCO's world heritage list.

France's Ministry of Culture has the highest authority on the management and protection of relics, and has set up leading groups in all its regions.

"Cultural Heritage Day" was initiated in France and on the third weekend in September, museums around the country are open to the public. Public museums are free of charge and private ones reduce their admission. Inspired by France, the first "European Cultural Heritage Day" was set up in 1991.
