Time to build new type of relationship with Great Britain

[2014-06-14 07:28]

Although the United Kingdom recognized the People's Republic of China way back in 1950, bilateral relations have not progressed smoothly because the UK has been indifferent to China's core interests. For instance, after former British prime minister John Major met with the Dalai Lama in 1991, all his successors have followed his example, ignoring the fact that the political exile has long been engaged in anti-China and secessionist activities.

Let's end the crimes of violence

[2014-06-14 07:28]

Serious violent incidents, like attacks on bus passengers or cult followers beating an innocent woman to death, have increased in the past few years. Such incidents reflect the social conflicts that have emerged during the social transformation of China. And although each incident has its own cause and effect, all cases have some common factors.

Is a declining US good for China?

[2014-06-13 07:28]

When the Asia Society's ChinaFile online magazine invited me to discuss whether a declining United States is good for China, my feeling was the question was loaded and confusing. Loaded because it seems to assume that Chinese will celebrate a declining US, given the sensational headlines of strategic rivalry between the two nations we see so often in the news media.

Attitude toward history

[2014-06-13 07:28]

THERE IS NO NEED AND REASON FOR JAPAN TO feel annoyed at China's application to UNESCO for the inclusion of 1937 Nanjing Massacre and "comfort women" of the World War II era in the Memory of the World Program. It is even more absurd for Japan to ask China to with draw the application.

Innovation tops academy reform

At a recent meeting of academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, President Xi Jinping emphasized that innovation should be the main direction for China's science and technology research.

'Naked officials' of corruption

[2014-06-13 07:28]

One cannot desire to have fish and bear's paw both at the same time, goes an old Chinese saying, implying that a person cannot have the best of both worlds. The proverb applies perfectly to luoguan or "naked officials" in Guangdong province who were recently demoted or forced to resign or retire prematurely. About 900 (mostly mid-level) officials in Guangdong were identified as luoguan, a popular term used to refer to officials whose spouses or children have acquired permanent residency or citizenship abroad, and penalized. Another 200 have been able to retain their posts after promising to bring their family members back home.

To eat, or not to eat dog meat

[2014-06-13 07:28]

The controversial annual dog meat-eating festival will be held on the summer solstice (June 21) in Yulin, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, when more than 10,000 dogs are likely to be slaughtered and served as hotpots with litchis and strong liquor.
