Shrinking population the bane of Japan

[2014-07-25 07:21]

The national census and surveys in Japan point to a demographic crisis. Japan has one of the highest life expectancies and one of the lowest fertility rates in the world. As a result, children below the age of 15 account for a record low 12.5 percent of the population, the Japanese Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry announced on April 1. The percentage of people aged 65 years and above has also hit a record, albeit on the higher side: 25.6 percent.

Painful past not to be repeated

Imperial Japane merged victorious in the 1894-95 Sino-Japanese War and set on its journey of invasions, occupations and destruction that claimed the lives of millions of people. Japan didn't stop its dance of death until it reached the brink of destructing itself at the end of World War II.Even today, Japan is an "abnormal state" because it refuses to own up to its war crimes.

BRICS bank vis-a-vis IMF

[2014-07-25 07:21]

Last week's agreement by the five BRICS member states to establish a development bank along with a currency reserve pool, they called the Contingency Reserve Arrangement, set off a storm of commentary suggesting that these new institutions would be rivals to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. But the key question of how they will operate remains unanswered, perhaps because the five countries haven't yet agreed on it among themselves. Perhaps, they will also be marginal players on the global stage in the foreseeable future.

The right time to study abroad

[2014-07-25 07:21]

I arrived in the United States as a fresh college graduate from Nanjing University 14 years ago for higher studies, and ultimately completed my doctorate at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. At that time, it was rare to hear about Chinese students funding their studies. A vast majority of Chinese students were, like me, getting full scholarship from American universities covering their tuition as well as living expenses.

Smart gifts promote changing China

[2014-07-24 07:15]

Silk, tea, porcelain and giant panda have traditionally represented China's image, the image of an "ancient civilization", to the outside world. But it seems new elements are taking over the important cultural task. Call it the strength of China's soft power, if you will.
