Beijing's Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has intercepted one of the world's most toxic creatures - a live, highly poisonous frog - the first time such an unexpected visitor has been spotted at a border entry point, the bureau said.

The frog, confirmed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences to be Dendrobates leucomelas, or a yellow-banded poison dart frog had been sent in a parcel from Hong Kong and was discovered by bureau staff via X-ray, the bureau said.

The amphibian, usually three to four centimeters long and with distinctive yellow stripes on its body, is normally found in South America, the bureau said.

The bureau has blacklisted the sender, and called on the public to not send live animals to the Chinese mainland across the border.
