Deadly arrogance of 'The Grey Lady'

The scandals in recent years add to the woe of the NYT underlined by poor discipline and rotten morality, which turned pride and confidence of the Grey Lady into arrogance.

Back in 2002, Pulitzer laureate Rick Bragg plagiarized the report of a journalism intern. The 2003 Jayson Blair scandal also clearly reveals the loopholes in the management of the time-honored newspaper. Plagiarism and fabrication were found in 36 out of the 73 stories he wrote in 7 months. Where was the preciseness of “The Grey Lady”?

Rem Rieder, a free-lancer and columnist of USA Today, points out that the Blair report has exposed the NYT's "frighteningly porous management structure, one that allowed a truth-challenged journalist to not only survive but thrive, despite a blinding array of warning lights."

It appears that the NYT is tarnishing the newspaper's brand by failing to check facts, investigate complaints and adhere to the basic procedures of news-making.

Last November, when President Barack Obama talked with Chinese President Xi Jinping on building a new pattern of relationship between great powers during his visit to China for the APEC summit, the NYT rudely criticized the host country because of troubles it met in getting China visa, which was a bitter fruit it sowed and reaped. "The Grey Lady" not only lost her manner, but her temper this time.
