BEIJING - China has undergone and is still undergoing tremendous changes, which are having an increasingly significant impact on the world. The global media is shifting focus to Beijing again for a key meeting of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

The four-day Third Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee, which kicked off Saturday, is undoubtedly another milestone along China's reform path.

In Asia, drastic changes have taken place in Vietnam, Laos and Bangladesh, where farmers have been moving to cities, living in high-rise apartments and even buying cars. Similar transformation can also be seen in India since it embarked on economic reform in 1991.

Myanmar, a once isolated nation, has also opened its door to the outside world.

However, in the Middle East, where people used to live a better life than the Chinese, the scenarios seem much worrying. Egypt's economy has stagnated for the past two decades.

Reform is a call of the times. Without reform, East Asia would not have its prosperity and vigor, Africa could not have become a "Continent of Hope," nor the European Union could be expected to withstand its debt crisis.

The upheaval in the Middle East also mirrors profound changes. Yet, the violent pursuit for reforms or changes has resulted in chaos and turbulence.

David Shambaugh, a US expert on China, wrote in his latest book, "China Goes Global: The Partial Power," that "For the past three decades, observers have watched how the world has impacted China; now the tables are turning and it is necessary to understand how China is impacting the world."

The success of China's reform and opening-up, a response to the world trend, has been achieved through its active participation in the common development of the world.

China has seized the opportunities brought about by peace and development in the world. It has also safeguarded world peace and promoted common development with other countries.

"The community of common destiny" coined by the Chinese leadership is a reflection of the new-type relations between China and the world.

Nowadays, many countries are still facing the task of reform and the global economy is also witnessing a tepid recovery from crisis. The CPC session, which is pushing for deeper reform and stronger power for China's socioeconomic development, is sure to attract the world's attention.

The concern over China is due to the country's closer bond with the world since it adopted reform and opening-up, which has benefited more and more countries.

It also reflects the surge of a worldwide reform and development as well as the world's hope for China to find a new path.

With its reform over the past 35 years, China has lifted most of its population out of poverty. During this period, it has also grown from the 10th to the second largest economy, which can be seen as one of the most profound changes since the end of the Cold War.

The ongoing CPC meeting is expected to introduce major policies and measures for China's further reforms. Overseas media noted the session will sound the bugle for comprehensive reforms, which will not only power China's development and innovation, but offer more opportunities for the world.

Of course, appreciation and encouragement, as well as doubt and worry are among those focused on China. However, one thing is sure that they will clearly see China's determination and confidence for deeper reform and opening-up.
