NANNING - Two people have been killed, and four remain missing in South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in heavy downpours triggered by Typhoon Haiyan, local authorities said on Tuesday.

The Civil Affairs Department of Guangxi said the two deaths were reported in Beihai City and Hengxian County of Nanning City, while the four people went missing after their pedicab fell into a flooded river in Hengxian on Monday night.

The four were among six people aboard the pedicab. The vehicle veered off a flooded road and fell into the Daliao River at around 6:30 pm. Two of the passengers managed to reach the bank.

More than 300 people have been mobilized to comb the riverside and search via speedboat for the missing.

The department said the strong gales and heavy downpours unleashed by Haiyan have affected 1.21 million people after the storm brushed into the region on Monday, forcing the evacuation of 26,300 people.
