A total of 362 domestic and international companies are showing their products at the first Foshan Agricultural Products Fair in Guangdong province from Sept 6-10.

The show focuses on food safety, as China is stepping up efforts to wipe out sub-standard and hazardous food such as recycled cooking oil, industrial salt and food with illegal additives.

Representatives of 100 food companies in Foshan vowed at the opening ceremony to boost corporate credibility and produce better quality food.

E-commerce technology aimed at shortening the supply chain from the farm to the dining table is also on show.

In a bid to improve food safety, the Foshan city government has entered the information of more than 1,000 food companies into a database, with the industry and commerce administration monitoring the food supply chain on a real-time basis, although a lot more needs to be done, said Mayor Liu Yuelun.

Liu said Foshan aims to become a national distribution center of quality food from home and abroad.
