The National Mathematical Modeling Contest, an educational competition, started in Xi'an on Friday.

The event attracted more than 60,000 college students from 33 Chinese provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, as well as students from Singapore and the United States.

Co-sponsored by the department of higher education of the Ministry of Education and the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the contest started in 1992 and has been held every year.

The topics of the contest are hot social, economic, and engineering issues.

The students of Xi'an Jiaotong University, for instance, had challenges such as designing a solar cabin and wine evaluation.
