Three teachers in Sichuan province have been arrested on suspicion of changing the college applications of 13 students without their knowledge.

On June 30 the students from Wansheng Senior High School in Meishan, a city in western Sichuan, were surprised to find the colleges they applied for after sitting for this year's national college entrance exam, had been changed to Sichuan Sanhe Vocational College in Luzhou, southeastern Sichuan.

"An investigation group was set up in Meishan to conduct an investigation among the school teachers," said deputy mayor Zhong Yi. The investigation revealed the colleges the students applied for had been changed by people using the students' registration numbers, admission cards for the national college entrance exam, their ID card numbers and passwords, to log on to a system used to choose colleges.

A teacher from the Sichuan Sanhe Vocational College, a deputy chief of the teaching administration office at Wansheng Senior High School and a teacher from the Shaomin Vocational and Technical School in Hejiang, are alleged to have stolen the students' information and changed their applications.

"Confirming the students' applications had been altered without their consent, the Meishan Municipal Admissions Office restored their initial applications, which would ensure fairness in admission," Zhong said.

The three teachers have not yet been charged with a criminal offence.
