Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari will focus on improving bilateral economic cooperation in meetings with Chinese leaders during his upcoming visit, Pakistan’s ambassador to China Masood Khan said on Friday.
Zardari will attend the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, on June 6 and 7. Pakistan has been an observer at the summit since 2005.
The SCO is working toward lasting peace and common prosperity, and Pakistan is subscribes to its goal to “create a harmonious region”, Khan said.
Pakistan collaborates with SCO members in fighting against terrorism, extremism and separatism, Khan added.
In his ninth visit to China, Zardari plans to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Vice-President Xi Jinping, according to Khan.
The leaders will survey the strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries and promote economic cooperation in multiple areas, particularly in energy, infrastructure and agriculture.
Recently, Pakistan expressed its wish to become a full member of the SCO, and it has submitted an application.
Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are full members of the SCO, which was established in 2001.
India, Pakistan, Iran and Mongolia are observers, and Belarus and Sri Lanka are dialogue partners.
