Police have detained a British man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman in Beijing on Tuesday night.

According to a statement released on Thursday, the alleged attack happened in the capital's Xuanwumen area at about 11 pm.

The news follows the release of footage online that appears to show a group of passers-by encountering a foreign man with a Chinese woman.

The woman, who was crying and lying on her back in a roadside flowerbed, can be heard saying she does not know the foreign man at the start of the video.

The footage then goes on to show the foreign man being attacked by at least two Chinese men and then lying unconscious in the road.

One version of the video posted on Youku (http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMzkzNDY5ODI0.html), the Chinese video-sharing website, had been viewed more than 2.6 million times as of 1 pm on Thursday.

Police arrested a "drunk" British suspect shortly after the incident.

According to Beijing Public Security Bureau, the suspect holds a tourist visa. It added on its official Sina Weibo micro blog that the case is still under investigation.
