SEOUL - One was killed and two injured as a hand grenade detonated at a training center for recruits in South Korea's 50th infantry division, Yonhap News Agency reported on Friday.
When a 20-year-old recruit was preparing to throw a hand grenade for training purpose at the training camp in the southeastern city of Daegu, it abruptly exploded for an unidentified reason at 11:13 am local time.
The recruit lost his right wrist with the blast, and a 27-year-old sergeant first class, who was instructing the recruit beside him, lost his life after having been taken to a hospital.
Another sergeant first class was wounded by shrapnel, but he was not sustaining life-threatening injury.
Some 200 other recruits suffered no injury as they were standing by some 30 meters away from the site.
