Indian women at risk in mental institutions

(Agencies) Updated: 2014-12-03 15:25

NEW DELHI - A report by Human Rights Watch says women and girls with disabilities in India are pushed into mental institutions, where they live in unsanitary conditions and are at constant risk of physical and sexual violence.

The report released Wednesday details the lives of women and girls with disabilities in six cities across India between December 2012 and November 2014.

While India's entire public health system is in a state of disrepair, those suffering from mental disabilities are especially at risk in country where there's little education about such illnesses.

Both men and women suffer from a lack of care and neglect if they suffer from mental or neurological ailments in India. But in this deeply misogynistic country, women are more vulnerable to abuse.
