Gang-raped victim gets treatment in Singapore

SINGAPORE - The Indian medical student, who was gang-raped on a moving bus in New Delhi, a case that has outraged the whole country, arrived at Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment, the hospital said Thursday.

"The patient arrived at Mount Elizabeth Hospital's Intensive Care Unit at 9:05 am this morning in an extremely critical condition," said the hospital spokesperson, adding that the girl is being examined and the hospital is working with the Indian High Commission.

"We request that the privacy of the patient and family be respected." the spokesperson said in a statement.

Local paper Straits Times reported that the girl was flown to the city-state at about 2 am, accompanied by "her parents and a team of Indian doctors led by Dr Yatin Gupta, head of the critical care unit at Delhi's Safdarjung hospital, where she was under treatment."

Reports said that the 23-year-old victim had been repeatedly beaten and raped by six drunken man on a moving bus in South Delhi on Sunday evening before she fought for her life with severe multiple intestinal, abdominal and other injuries. Her condition continues to be critical.

The case shocked India, triggering protests by college students and calls for death penalty for the criminals.

The six suspects have now been arrested.

Rapes take place frequently in Indian capital with at least 600 cases reported so far this year.
