Former head of People's Daily dies at 96

BEIJING - Hu Jiwei, former head of the People's Daily, the flagship newspaper of the Communist Party of China, died at the age of 96 on Sept 16 in Beijing.

Hu was born in August 1916 in the city of Zigong in Southwest China's Sichuan province. He became the newspaper's editor-in-chief in January 1977 and worked as the newspaper's president between April 1982 and October 1983.

He was also a delegate to the eighth, 11th and 12th CPC national congresses and a national lawmaker, as well as a member of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, the top legislature.
