BEIJING - Around 20 high-tech energy-saving trains will be running on a new metro line in Shenzhen, South China's Guangdong Province, before the 2011 World University Games.

The first train has already been delivered to the Shenzhen Metro Group, said CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co, the train maker, on Monday.

The six-carriage train can convert kinetic energy generated from braking into electricity, which will help save 100,000 kwh of power per year, compared with common metro trains, said a spokesman with the train producer, which is based in Central China's Hunan Province.

The 3.1-meter-wide train is 9.6 tonnes lighter than an average subway train due to weigh-reducing technologies.

CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co signed a 193-million-dollar contract with Shenzhen Metro in April 2009 to provide 30 such trains to the city.

The first 20 trains will be put into service ahead of the games which will open in August 2011.
