Earthquakes rock Okinawa, Hokkaido prefectures in Japan

TOKYO - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 struck off the coast of Japan's Okinawa Monday, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.

The temblor occurred at 2: 20 pm local time, with the epicenter at a latitude of 27.4 degrees north and longitude of 128.6 degree east. The quake occurred at a depth of 40 km.

On the Japanese seismic scale that peaks at 7, the quake measured 5 minus in Amami, Kagoshima prefecture and 4 in some other places in Kagoshima and Okinawa prefectures.

The weather agency has not issued a tsunami warning or advisory, and no damage had been reported yet.

Another earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 rocked the coast of the Urakawa, Hokkaido prefecture in norther Japan several minutes earlier at 2:13 pm.

The temblor occurred at a depth of 20 km, with the epicenter at a latitude of 41.7 degrees north and longitude of 143.0 degree east.

No tsunami warning has been issued either.
