NEW DELHI - At least 10 people have been killed and several more are feared dead as an under-construction flyover collapsed in a busy area in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata Thursday, a police official said.

"Ten bodies have been pulled out of the debris of the flyover. Several injured people have also been taken out by rescuers and rushed to a nearby hospital. Efforts are on to rescue people, mainly the construction workers, who are feared trapped under the debris," he said.

Local TV channels reported, quoting eye-witnesses, that the flyover in central Kolkata collapsed after a loud rumble and then there was a lot of smoke.

"Disaster management officials and several policemen and fire personnel are at the spot where a large crowd of people have also gathered after the collapse. The local people are helping the rescuers in bringing out construction workers trapped under the debris," the official said.
