Residents required to leave after volcano eruption in Japan

TOKYO - About 130 residents living on the Kuchinoerabu island off Kagoshima Prefecture in southwest Japan are asked to leave and seek evacuation after a volcano eruption on the island at around 10:00 local time Friday.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued new alerts demanding local residents to leave the island to seek evacuation, after the agency issued a level-5 alert to the affected island requiring local residents seeking evacuation. There is no immediate reports on injuries so far, according to local reports.

Thick black smoke was witnessed after the eruption, according to NHK footage.

The government is to hold an emergency meeting on the eruption.
