PARIS - A total of 940 vehicles were burnt on the New Year's eve in France, in comparison with an official figure of 1,067 cars burnt in 2013, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Friday.
In a statement posted on the ministry's website, Cazenuve added that 308 people were arrested on Dec. 31, 2014 with 251 placed into custody.
"A coherent, active and deterrent mobilization of security forces has helped to prevent major incidents to take place in the country, except in Paris where a brawl caused the death of a young man," the minister said, adding the alleged perpetrator was immediately arrested and investigation was underway.
Setting cars on fire has become quite a tradition in French suburbs on New Year's eve recent years as a display of vandalism.
On this New Year eve, 9,000 policemen and gendarmes were mobilized to secure safety in roads, in the famous Champs Elysee and near the Eiffel Tower where hundreds of thousands of people gathered for the New Year countdown.
