BEIJING - Fan Changlong, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, met with visiting Australian Defense Minister David Johnston on Monday in Beijing.

China and Australia, as important countries in the Asia-Pacific region, have extensive and profound mutual interests. Military relations between the two countries have maintained sound momentum, Fan said.

China is willing to work with Australia to enhance dialogue, exchanges and cooperation with the Australian military to contribute to the development of a bilateral strategic partnership, Fan told Johnston.

Johnston expressed optimism for the bilateral military relationship, hoping that his visit would help foster a strong and friendly relationship between the two armed forces.

Earlier in the day, Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan held talks with Johnston.
