BEIJING - Top political advisor Yu Zhengsheng on Wednesday met with chairman of Taiwan's People First Party (PFP) James CY Soong.

The simplest and strongest common wish of people across the Taiwan Strait is to cherish the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and maintain sound development momentum, Yu said while meeting Soong at the Diaoyutai State Guest House.

"We have the responsibility and confidence to maintain and develop cross-Strait relations," said Yu, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

He urged adhering to the "1992 consensus," opposing "Taiwan independence," and promoting cross-Strait political mutual trust.

As long as people across the Strait hold the belief and mentality that both sides of the Taiwan Strait are of one family, they can feel each other's sincerity and goodwill and join hands to promote the peaceful development of relations, Yu said.

Soong founded the PFP in March 2000 and has acted as chairman of the Party since then. He visited the mainland in 2005 and 2009.
