ATHENS - An elderly man died during the heavy rainfall which has hit many part of Greece this weekend, causing floods and transport disruptions, according to local authorities.

The 67-year old victim was found dead by a river near the city of Karditsa in central Greece, which has been most affected by the strong rainstorms, as two rivers overflew, flooding approximately 4 million square meters of agricultural areas, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

Dozens were evacuated from their settlement and were given temporary shelter at a local stadium.

The heavy torrential rainfall, strong winds of up to 7 Beaufort scale and snowfall in some mountainous areas across the country have caused disruptions in parts of national highways and ferry services, while even in Athens and other major cities, the Fire Brigade received hundreds of calls for flooded houses.

According to the national meteorological service (EMY), the bad weather front will retreat gradually from Wednesday.
